Talking sheep and wool on the Internet

Deborah Maxwell, DPI&F
Revised by Nicole Sallur, DPI&F

Introduction

Have you ever wanted to talk to others, or ask questions about sheep and wool, but didn't want to leave home or know who to ask?

Internet conversation pages or discussion lists could interest you! They give you the opportunity to just read messages without being involved, comment on messages, or start your own discussion on a particular issue.

Subscription is free, but lookout, you could get hooked and spend hours engrossed in conversations on a list. However, you can do it at a time that suits you - even the middle of the night. It is also easy to unsubscribe at any time.

Sheep and wool internet discussion lists

There are many thousands of lists covering just as many topics. Regarding sheep and wool, there are two which might take your interest.

Sheep-L

Sheep-L is a well established list with over 600 subscribers. While many of the subscribers are North American, people all over the world subscribe to it. You can expect between 5 and 50 messages per day, depending on the issues at hand.

To suscribe to Sheep-L send an e-mail message as follows:

  • To: listserv@listserv.uu.se
  • Subject: (leave this blank)
  • In the main body of the message write: subscribe sheep-L
  • Send message.

Aussie-Sheep-Net

Aussie-Sheep-Net is Australian based and the list server is Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, Queensland. This list has about 170 subscribers. Expect to receive about one message a week, depending on current topics of interest.

To suscribe to Aussie-Sheep-Net send an e-mail message as follows:

  • Subject: (leave this blank)
  • In the main body of the message write: subscribe aussie-sheep-net Yourfirstname Yourlastname (Yourfirstname and Yourlastname should be replaced by your real full name)
  • Send message.

What happens when you subscribe?

After subscribing to a discussion list, you will receive a message to confirm your subscription to the list. Often you will have to reply to this message. Either this confirmation message or a subsequent message will contain instructions on how to send messages to the list, how to unsubscribe, plus other list information. You will then receive messages automatically.
