The Better Berries Program, a joint project between the Queensland Government and industry, selects and develops strawberry varieties for national and international markets. Through targeted research and development (R&D), the program has played a major role in building the Queensland strawberry industry. Queensland is now the largest strawberry producing state in Australia.

The program's research activities are helping the industry by:

  • introducing diversity through varietal breeding and introductions
  • improving yields through irrigation and nutrition management
  • reducing chemical requirements
  • breeding for an extended season (Queensland strawberries can now be enjoyed from May to October).
  • The latest research and development results are available in the 2005 Strawberry R&D update.

These activities are assisting the Queensland strawberry industry to increase its economic potential on a sustainable basis. They are also guaranteeing everyone better quality, ethically produced strawberries that are available at the grocer for longer.

The Better Berries Program is supported by Horticulture Australia Limited, Queensland Strawberry Growers Association, Growcom and Strawberries Australia.

For further information on the Better Berries Program, please contact the DPI&F Business Information Centre on 13 25 23 (for the cost of a local call) or email: callweb@dpi.qld.gov.au
