How to apply for a General Fisheries Permit
You need a General Fisheries Permit if you want to engage in an activity that would normally contravene fisheries legislation. Most activities that require a permit fall into the following general categories:
- Taking undersized fish
- Taking prohibited species
- Using unauthorised gear
To get a permit, you would need to have a special reason for the activity, for example undertaking fisheries research.
Note:
- You will need to attach for consideration a written proposal describing your intended activities, with information about the species, the number of specimens, the location of your activity and the gear you intend to use.
- If your application affects an area subject to a Native Title claim, the Indigenous organisation/s concerned will have to be notified. You may have to supply additional information and there could be some delay in processing your application. Follow the Checklist for Applications that Require Native Title Notification when writing your proposal.
- You will also need to pay the application fee.
