Estimated time: 3 x 45 minutes

Materials

Copies of survey — one for each family circulated by the school’s newsletter

Teaching Strategies

Surveys need to be designed so that answers are unambiguous and so that some statistical information can be derived for analysis. For example, the survey could be based on using numbers on a rating scale and yes/no questions. Groups should be allocated different sections of the questionnaire for which they are responsible, that is, for writing, collating and interpreting.

Working Scientifically

(I: formulating questions, U: inferring and interpreting from data, (C: exploring and elaborating ideas, creating diagrams)

  1. In small groups, discuss and compile questions that will assess awareness of and opinions about exotic pest fish. Discuss format of survey (e.g. yes/no questions, true/false statements, rating, ranking, matching, listing) and how the results will be analysed and displayed.

  2. Once survey questionnaire is written, circulate copies to school families and other community members.

  3. Collect data, graph/tabulate responses and analyse and summarise the results.

  4. Publish results in the school or local newspaper, local ICM or Waterwatch newsletters.
