Student activity d.3
Developmental

A fishy report

Outcome

Science: Life and Living (3.2, 3.3)

Focus

Students are given the opportunity to record and organise information in order to write a report on an exotic pest fish species.

Estimated time: 2 x 45 minutes (longer for presentations)

Materials

Teaching strategies

The information report should be presented in the correct style. It should include a title page, table of contents, summary of the report’s purpose, the body of the report (organised under headings and subheadings), figures, tables, illustrations, graphs, maps etc. (these should be numbered and captioned and referred to in the text), conclusion and references (correctly set out).

The body of the report could include headings such as physical characteristics, introduction to Australia, past and current distribution, habitat, behaviour, reproductive strategies, impact on the environment, management issues. Students should carefully review previous activities in the module and develop a clear outline of headings for their report.

Working scientifically

(I: assessing resources, C: exploring and elaborating ideas, using report genre)

  1. Students are introduced to the genre of an information report and select an exotic pest fish to study (refer to resources such as EDFISH materials and Fishweb site).
  2. Collectively brainstorm how to organise the report, discuss heading options, potential for illustrative material, information sources, etc.
  3. Each student uses information collated from the brainstorm to produce an outline of the content of their report. Some students may wish to focus on a particular aspect of the pest fish problem. A draft copy could be produced for teacher review before the final report is written. Students should be warned against copying large sections of text and guided on how to summarise, restructure and reword material.
  4. Students produce a final copy of the report and prepare an oral presentation of it.
