Grooming

There are lots of different kinds of brushes and combs, and even special gloves, that you can use to groom your dog. Using a flea comb will help you to check that your flea prevention program is working properly.

If you buy your dog from a breeder they will tell you what to use to groom your dog and how to use it. Otherwise check with your vet as to the best equipment to use to keep your dog's coat clean and tangle free.

Groom your dog regularly and talk to him while you do it - he'll love it.

If you are in an area where there are ticks that get on dogs, make sure you check your dog for ticks every day by feeling for lumps while brushing him.

Read these fact sheets about why it's important to spend time caring for animals.

Try this activity to see how much you know about helping to care for the Smile Clan animals by doing some of the things that they can't do for themselves (PDF download PDF 40 kB).

Bathing

Bathing your dog regularly can do two things - keep her coat clean and smelling nice, and in tick areas, using a special tick shampoo will help protect her against ticks.

Some dogs love being bathed and some dogs hate it. The younger you can train your dog how to behave at bath time the easier it will be for everyone.

If you brush your dog regularly you shouldn't need to bath her as often. However you certainly will need to bath her if she rolls in something yucky, as dogs love to do.

Make sure you rinse all of the shampoo out of your dog's coat when you bath her, and she will love it!

Pooper-scooper

You should pick up the dog poo in your yard at least once a day. Picture of a pooper scooper

And that's not just because it's yucky if you step in it! There may be worm eggs in dog poo that will reinfect your dog. Dog worms can also infect people so you should always wash your hands after touching your dog or picking up dog poo.

So pick up the poo before throwing your dog her ball in the yard!

Remember to take something to pick up your dog's poo when you walk her on the street or in the park. A plastic bag is a good start. Lots of councils now have big fines if you don't clean up after your dog.
